This pet portrait features a brindle Great Dane named Truman, with a solid color background in antique gold. It was painted with acrylic paints on an 11″ x 14″stretches canvas, and finished in February of 2023. It was my second portrait of 2023, and also in a natural color scheme. The unique solid gold background was requested by the owner, to represent the school colors of Missouri State University, since they are an alumni. I had to make sure the dog did not disappear into the background, as the tan and browns are very similar in tone to the gold. Truman’s portrait was a challenge due to the lack of good reference photos. The person commissioning it was a friend of the owner, and they only had access to small images from their social media page, so they were not very good quality. As is typical, I used one main photo for the post reference, and a few others for the markings, since the photo was very blurry and washed out, and it was difficult to see the brindle markings. Great Danes are very regal dogs, and I wanted to capture that in my portrait. I really like his pose in the reference photo, and I think it brought out his personality well. I was careful to try and capture his markings as accurately as possible. Brindle is a very difficult fur pattern to paint well, but I tried to just focus on shapes as much as possible. I used a variety of browns and tans, as well as some gray, and black, for the fur. The gray adds some depth as well as shadows to the fur.
