Available for Purchase as an Art Print, Home Decor, T-shirts and More.In this gallery are paintings of wild felines. This includes the “Big Cats”, such as lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, and cougars, as well as smaller members of the family Felidae. These expressive portraits are painted with a vibrant palette of colors. The use of bold full saturation color and broad brush strokes creates a unique and energetic contemporary style portrait for a somewhat common subject. These portraits are what I call “colorful realism”. They are realistic in their proportions and anatomy, yet are expressed with bright colors not seen in nature, bringing the wild felines to life.
The family Felidae contains 34 living species, split into two subfamilies: the Pantherinae (“big cats”) and the Felinae (“small cats”). The “big cats” include the lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, snow leopard, and clouded leopard. The “small cats” include all the other feline species, including the cougar, ocelot, lynx, bobcat, margay, caracal, serval, cheetah, Pallas’ cat, and the domestic cat. Other less well known species of feline include the Asian golden cat, African golden cat, bay cat, marbled cat, Andean mountain cat, kodkod, Geoffrey’s cat, oncilla, pampas cat, jaguarundi, fishing cat, and sand cat. This family is very fascinating to me, and I will be planning on trying to paint as many of these species as I possibly can. The limiting factor is finding appropriate reference photos, as many of these cat species are reclusive and rare, and few photos exist of them. If you are interested to learn more about this diverse mammalian family, please visit the Wikipedia article about the different species of felines.
I am able to create a unique one-of-a-kind portrait of any animal of your choosing. If you are interested in commissioning me to create an animal painting in my style, you can contact me with the Commission form above.
