Healing Lotus colored pencil drawing

Healing Lotus Rainbow Yin Yang Mandala Drawing

The original artwork titled “Healing Lotus” was created on April 26, 2009 with Prismacolor colored pencils on Strathmore drawing paper, 8″ x 10″. It was drawn in a time period where I created many mandala drawings. This unique drawing features a psychedelic mandala with a central yin yang of red and blue, surrounded by rainbow colored lotus petals radiating outward in a spiral pattern. Outside the mandala are rainbow lines and rays of sunshine which appear to be coming from within the mandala itself. A larger version of this artwork can be seen in my Portfolio gallery on my website.

A mandala is a geometric symbol, often circle shaped, and is a key feature in sacred geometry. Mandala is the sanksrit word for “circle”, and they typically represent the cosmos and the symbolism of the mind and body internal universe. Mandalas are commonly seen in east Asian artwork and religious paintings, although they can often feature in Christian artwork as well as religious symbolism artwork throughout the world. Mandalas are often used for meditating, and this one can heal the heart and rejuvenate the spirit.

Yin Yang

The central yin yang represents balance within the spirit as well as outside in your interactions with others. The Yin Yang symbol comes from the ancient Chinese concept of dualism, and is a key component of Taoist philosophy. The yin yang symbol represents the balance of forces in the universe, such as light and dark, masculine and feminine, death and birth. The yin yang represents how opposite forces are actually complementary to each other, and necessary for each other’s existence. They are typically represented as a black and white symbol, but in this drawing I chose to represent it with red and blue.

The Chakras

The rainbow colored lotus petals represent the colors of the chakra. Although there are actually seven chakras, I chose to draw eight lotus petals to give the mandala symmetry. Each color represents a specific chakra, from red to purple, that flows from the bottom to the top of the body. Red is the root chakra, which is found at the base of the spine, and represents your ground. Orange is the sacral chakra, which is located near the navel, and represents sexuality and creativity. Yellow is the solar plexus chakra, which is located in the middle of the abdomen, and represents confidence. Green is the heart chakra, located in the center of the chest, and represents compassion and empathy. Blue is the throat chakra, located in the center of the neck, and represents communication and self-expression. Indigo/violet is the third eye chakra, located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows, and represents wisdom and intuition. Finally, purple/magenta is the crown chakra, which is located two inches above the head, and enlightenment and a higher state of consciousness.

In this mandala there is an extra green petal, more of a teal color, halfway between green and blue. This extra green petal was added in to give extra healing power to the heart chakra. The chakras are found on lotus petals that radiate outwards from the center in a spiral pattern. The lotus flower is a powerful and ancient symbol of divine perfection. The lotus represents the ability to gain control of the energy flowing through the chakras. The rainbow lines and beams of light emanating from the outer wall of the mandala circle represents releasing positive energy to the universe.

Psychedelic Rainbow Trout Fish Framed Picture

Psychedelic Rainbow Trout Fish Drawing

This drawing, titled “Psychedelic Rainbow Trout”, was drawn with Prismacolor colored pencils on 11″ x 14″ Strathmore 400 series drawing paper. It was completed on December 6, 2015.  This is one of several psychedelic themed drawings that were drawn during 2015. The reason for this is that I was contacted by a calendar company earlier that year. They wanted to create a psychedelic art calendar featuring my drawings.  At the time I did not have enough drawings for a calendar, and so I was busy creating some new artwork for the calendar.  Unfortunately, the proposal did not pass, but at least I got several cool new drawings out of it!  This was one of them. You can see a larger view of the artwork in my Portfolio.

This is loosely based off of a random fish drawing that I had done several years ago (which I can’t seem to find), of a jumping fish surrounded by rainbow colored spirals.  I wasn’t really happy with that drawing, and wanted to do a better version.  I came up with the idea of having the fish jumping out of water in front of the setting sun, with the suns rays waving through the air. The sun became a spiral, and the rays became very funky, and staring at that area becomes a kind of optical illusion where the rays seem to rotate!  Totally unintentional.  Most of the time with these types of drawings, I really don’t have any overall plan as far as colors or designs.  It just sort of starts to emerge while I am drawing it, which is what happened here.

Ceasar the Champagne Pitbull Dog Colorful Painting

My latest pet portrait features a colorful painting of a champagne pitbull terrier dog named Ceaser. Created with acrylic paints on a square 8″ x 8″ stretched canvas, completed on November 5, 2020. This is the first time I have done a square canvas, and I think it really works well for this subject! For those of you who are not familiar with the term, “champagne” is one of the color variations of pitbulls, and it is a dilute light grayish-tan color, like a very light fawn, and they have a red nose. You can view a larger image of this painting in my Portfolio.

Ceasar the Champagne Pitbull Dog photo vs painting

Ceasar photo vs painting

Recreating Ceasar’s fur color in my colorful style was a bit challenging. It is not really orange, but not really gray either, somewhere in between, and dilute in color.  For this portrait, I did something a bit differently than my usual process.  I mixed several colors together to create a base coat as similar to his fur color as I could.  For the champagne areas, I mixed unbleached titanium, light yellow, a bit of orange, and some fluorescent pink.  I then layered on additional colors, such as purple, pink, blue, orange and yellow, all mixed with a bit of white to dilute them and create a more pastel color palette. The “red” nose was created with magenta, orange, light pink, and white.  For the white areas, I used various blues and purples to create the shadows in the neck and body.  The eyes were left natural, using amber and brown.

Colorful Fluorescent Dog Portrait

This bright fluorescent pet portrait painting features a mixed breed dog named Belle.  It was completed on September 16, 2020, and was created with acrylic paints on a 8″ x 10″ stretched canvas. The portrait was painted with bright rainbow colors, against a background that is a gradient of blue and green.  The mostly blue background is a complementary color to the mostly orange color of the subject, which makes the dog “pop” from the canvas.  The reserved, plain background allows the subject to be the sole focus of the painting.  It is an abstract version of the background in the actual photo reference, which was a bright blue sky and green grass. A larger version of this painting can be seen in my Portfolio Gallery.

Belle is a mostly brownish-tan color, which was represented in this painting as bright orange. The pose of the dog is dynamic and original.  She is not facing forward, nor is she facing sideways (profile view). Her face is at a three-quarters pose, and she is looking at something off camera, and her ears are moving, listening to her surroundings.  This pose makes for a more interesting portrait than the traditional full head on symmetrical poses that are popular with portrait paintings.

I used a good amount of fluorescent paints in the creation of this painting.  Since fluorescent paints are more transparent, I paint a base payer first, then layer the fluorescent paints over top of it.  It is impossible to see this in the scan, since a computer screen cannot differentiate between regular orange and fluorescent orange.  But it is very obvious in the actual painting.  Regular orange appears rather dull and drab when compared to the fluorescent orange paint. I also used touches of fluorescent pink and yellow.  A lighter yellow color was used for the highlights, and purple and blues were used very minimally for shading.  Little touches of green were added throughout to create interest and break up large areas of a single color.

If you like this painting and want one of your own pet, please visit my Pet Portrait Commission Page to find out about pricing and other information.

This artwork is also available in my Online Print Store for purchase as a fine art print, canvas print, home decor products such as throw pillows and blankets, and other products like tote bags and cell phone cases.

Portrait of Two Sheep in Colorful Style

This painting is a portrait of two Lincoln Longwool sheep named Charlie (left) and Curtis (right).  This is a unique pet portrait, very different from my typical dog and cat portraits. It was created with acrylic paints on an 18″ x 24″ stretched canvas.  It was completed on September 5, 2020. It is painted in a very colorful style, using a lot of bright rainbow colors.  This is the very first time I have painted sheep, and it was a great learning experience, especially learning how to paint wool texture.

A Note on Painting White Animals

Sheep in general are mostly white, with many shades of gray and brown tones here and there.  White fur (or, in this case, wool) is never really “white”. There are many hidden tones and colors in the hairs, especially in the areas of shadow and shade.  Upon closer inspection, most “white” animals have lots of undertones in their fur, including creams, yellows, oranges, blues, and purples. It is fun to paint white animals and bring out all those hidden colors in a more saturated form.

Reference photos of sheep vs Painting

Above is a comparison of the reference photos that were used for the painting, and the painting itself. Both of the photo references were cell phone snaps of actual physical photographs (the king that are taken and developed on paper). They were adequate for my purposes, but I did need to look at clearer and more detailed photographs of this breed of sheep to fill in some details.  Other photos were provided by the owner to fill in other details, such as the eye color and ear markings.  Since these two sheep are in different stages of being sheared, I did a virtual “haircut” to Charlie (the one on the left) so it would match the other sheep’s wool length. I really liked the dramatic side-lighting of the first photo, and used that as my reference for the lighting.  I decided to make the lighting for the painting as a late afternoon sunlight, so the areas where the sun hits the sheep it is more orange and yellow, and the shadows and shaded areas are more purple and blue. The owner wanted them to be standing in a grassy field.  The grass that is closer to the foreground is in focus and detailed, and the grass more in the background is blurred like with a shallow depth of field.

Sheep Closeup

Sheep Closeup

Detailed View of Sheep

In the above photo you can see a close up view of the details in the painting. Here you can see the details in the eye, and the wool texture. It was created by using an old beat up brush that has the bristles sticking out in different directions.  That brush was perfect for creating this texture.  Sometimes, having an old beat up brush can be useful for something! I used a whole rainbow of color for this painting.

Photographing the Painting vs Scanning

Finally, the above photograph shows a comparison with the finished painting taken with a cell phone camera, vs the final one which was a professional scan.  This shows the dramatic difference between different sources of digitally acquiring paintings.  The photo was taken with my cell phone in indoor lighting (LED soft white lightbulbs, two directions), and with minor color and brightness corrections.  It is hard to tell from this small picture, but it is a bit blurry and there are a lot of compression artifacts, and the color is a bit off.  The scan on the right was done by a professional scanner, and the details are sharper and the colors more accurate to the actual painting.  I suggest to artists who wish to have their artwork reproduced as prints to get it scanned professionally and not make prints from cell phone snaps.  There is a huge difference in quality.

If you like this style of painting and want one of your own pet (or any animal), please visit my Pet Portraits Commission Page for more information.

Inner Strength Psychedelic Sri Yantra Mandala

This vibrant mandala titled “Inner Strength” was created on January 29, 2009.  It is drawn with Prismacolor colored pencils on Strathmore drawing paper, and measures 18″ x 18″.  It is present in the Psychedelic Gallery of my online portfolio. A larger version of the drawing can be seen on m webpage here: Inner Strength. It was hand drawn using a ruler, protractor, compass, and drawing instructions from this website – How To Draw a Sri Yantra. A psychedelic tiger’s face emerges from the Sri Yantra, a Hindu symbol of meditation and enlightenment.  Two layers of lotus petals in rainbow colors encircle the main mandala.

About the Sri Yantra

The Sri Yantra, or Sri Chakra, features nine interlocking triangles with a central point called the “bindu”.  It is one of the most popular symbols of Sacred Geometry, and is used in the Shri Vidya school of Hinduism. It is said to be the “mother of all yantras”. The triangles represent the cosmos, as well as the human body. Another name for the sri yanta is the Navayoni Chakra, which refers to the nine triangles. The nine main triangles overlap to form 43 smaller triangles of various sizes, in five levels. The upwards facing triangles represent the masculine form, while the downward pointing triangles represent the feminine form. There are nine levels total, including the five triangle levels, the Bindu at the center, the inner and outer lotus rings, and the outer square with portals (missing from the drawing). Each of these levels has a special symbolic meaning and name. You can read more about this on the Wikipedia page about the Sri Yantra.

Inspiration for the Drawing

This Inner Strength mandala was created at a time when I was drawing lots of mandalas, mostly inspired by Asian and Celtic symbolism.  The Sri Yantra is considered one of the most difficult mandalas to draw by hand, and I wanted the challenge of creating it.  I chose a very large size of paper, since there are so many details.  I initially practiced on a smaller piece of paper before moving onto a larger size.  I wanted to make this mandala my own, so I put my own signature designs on it, including the psychedelic rainbow colors, paisley-like designs in the lotus petals, and the alternating colors.  The tiger’s face was chosen to make the yantra more dynamic, and the Ohm symbol was added as a symbol of enlightenment.  The only thing missing from this drawing was the “gate” on the outside, and that was because I ran out of room on the paper. That makes this Sri Yantra incomplete.

Psychedelic Rainbow Black Cat Pet Portrait Painting

My latest pet portrait is of a long haired black cat named Felix. This painting was completed on August 5, 2020.  It was created with acrylic paints on a 12″ x 16″ stretched canvas. The reference photo features a long haired black cat laying down in the sun on the carpet in front of a couch. I sought to replicate the dramatic back lighting while still striving to make it as colorful as possible, and used a palette of full saturation rainbow colors for this cat portrait. A larger version of this drawing can be seen in my portfolio here: Colorful Pet Portrait – Felix.

felix photo and painting

Felix rainbow cat photo and painting comparison

Above you can see the reference photo, on the left, compared to the painting, on the right. Most long haired cats are a lighter color on the areas that have the longest fur, usually the neck, chest, belly, and rear end. This is more pronounced on long haired black cats, who can also develop “bronzing” on their longer fur, creating a brownish tint. You can see in the photo reference that Felix has lighter fur in his neck ruff and belly, and so I sought to represent that in the painting by using lighter colors and a warmer color palette.  The darker black areas of his face and arms are painted with a palette of mostly cool colors, such as purple, blue, and some green, with a bit of magenta. Though the carpet is white, I decided to use yellows, oranges and greens for the carpet in the painting.  This provides some contrast with the colors used in his portrait.

Above are some close up views of the painting, showing the details and bright colors that I used.  Click on each one to see a larger version. I use Liquitex Basics and Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paints. I work in layers, which means I “block in” areas of color and then layer details on top.  The base colors I used on the face, for example, are Dioxazine Purple for the darker areas, and Light Blue Permanent for the light areas.  Then I add various shades of blues, purples, and greens on top of that, including some Fluorescent Pink to make the colors pop. This results in a really dynamic rainbow cat painting!

Psychedelizard – Psychedelic Rainbow Chameleon Art

This artwork, titled “Psychedelizard”, features a psychedelic rainbow panther chameleon, and was probably my very first psychedelic animal drawing.  It was drawn on August 31, 2007 with Prismacolor markers and colored pencils on Strathmore drawing paper.

Inspiration for the Drawing

This drawing was inspired by many things.  Many years before, in 1994, I saw an advertisement in National Geographic that featured a chameleon.  I thought it was really cool, and I cut it out and kept it.  I was inspired even then to create a drawing like that. But it would be many years before I felt comfortable enough to tackle it.  As you can see my artwork is really nothing like the photograph, but the photo did give me inspiration to draw a chameleon among brightly colored leaves.  Those leaves morphed into the spirals and abstract shapes that ended up in the background of the final drawing. Chameleons are already kind of psychedelic in their own right, and it was only natural that I make a drawing of one. Unfortunately I do not have this photo anymore, I can’t seem to find where I put it.  I was only able to find one copy of it on Pinterest.

My Own Chameleon – Curly

My own pet inspired me to do this drawing too. I had a male veiled chameleon named Curly that i acquired in 2006.  He was a rescue from the vet clinic where I worked at the time. The previous owner did not take care of him properly, and as a result he suffered from metabolic bone disease.  Basically, this disease is caused when they do not get enough calcium in their diet, and also do not receive a UV light, which is required so they can make enough Vitamin D in their skin.  Without this, their bones cannot form properly, and become rubbery and soft, and they develop seizures.  He was in really bad shape, and with the vet’s round the clock care, he did recover.

Chameleon Curly

Curly the Veiled Chameleon

Even though I never had a chameleon before, I always loved them, and so I adopted him.  He was very sweet and a great pet.  Chameleons have a tendency to be aggressive, but he was not.  They are very high maintenance animals, requiring both high humidity and good ventilation, a constant source of running water, and a high protein diet. They also require a UV light and heat lamp.  I had him for about a year when he became sick.  He developed kidney failure, which was a result of his previous metabolic bone disease.  Most reptiles never really recover from it, and unfortunately even with supportive care, he passed away.

Two Versions

There are two versions of this drawing that I tend to use online.  The original version of the drawing features the odd shaped design that can be seen to the left.  The cropped version is a cut down version of the drawing in the shape of a square, with some missing details filled in.  The square version is the one that I most commonly use for products such as art prints and tote bags.  The original version I still use for t-shirts and stickers. Larger versions of both of these drawings can be seen in my portfolio: Psychedelizard (original) and Psychedelizard (square).

Psychedelic Dragons Rainbow Mandala Drawing

Originally titled “Epiphany”, now titled “Psychedelic Dragons Rainbow Mandala”, this drawing was one of my earliest psychedelic artworks. It was completed on March 31, 2007, and was created with Prismacolor colored pencils on drawing paper. A larger version of this drawing can be seen in my portfolio gallery – Epiphany.

Celtic Mandala and Triskelion Symbolism

It was heavily influenced by sacred geometry and ancient Celtic artwork designs and symbolism. It is a complicated and many layered geometric mandala based on the Celtic triskele (or triskelion). A triskelion is an abstract figure consisting of three spirals that have radial symmetry.

The central figure of this drawing is a triskele of three groups of four fish, with blue, green, yellow and red coloration, overlaid on abstract spiral designs. There is a triquetra or Trinity Knot in the very middle between the fish tails. An inner border consists of three Chinese dragons overlaid on a golden abstract design with spirals. An outer border consists of a ring of rainbow colored Celtic waves. Outside of the wave border is a light yellow circle with sun rays reaching out.  Encircling that is a golden colored belt which is just out of the drawing, with more waves and spirals, on top of multicolored psychedelic dragon scales.  Many layers, very complicated.

The Myth of The Koi Fish and the Waterfall

Although while I was drawing this it was just to create a cool design with dragons and rainbows, the mandala itself can be said to be loosely based on the Chinese myth about the koi fish who swim up a waterfall and turn into dragons. The story goes that a group of koi fish were swimming in the Yellow River in China, going upstream against the current. When they reached the waterfall at the end of the river, they encountered a waterfall, and many of the koi fish turned back. A few koi fish remained, and they leaped and swam hard against the waterfall, trying to reach the top. One day, after a hundred years of swimming and leaping, one koi fish managed to make it to the top of the waterfall. To reward the koi fish for his perseverance, the gods transformed him into a dragon.

This drawing was created at a period of time that I was fascinated by Celtic artwork and mandalas.  I created several psychedelic mandalas during this time period.  I really love the symbolism involved, and the sense of peace and meditation while creating these fascinating geometric forms. I wish I had created more.  The reason I stopped is because I honestly had trouble coming up with unique and original ideas.  I didn’t want to seem like I was just copying other people’s work.

My popular drawing “Psychedelic Wolf” was one of my earliest psychedelic animal drawings.  It was completed on February 4, 2008, and was created with Prismacolor colored pencils on Strathmore drawing paper.  It features a portrait of a wolf with alternating bands of colors forming the wolf’s head and upper body, with a background also consisting of colored bands of different colors. A larger version of this drawing can be seen in my portfolio here – Psychedelic Wolf.

Inspiration for the Artwork

In the years between 2006-2008, I created several now popular psychedelic inspired drawings.  This marked a turning point in my artistic style as well as marked the beginnings of my professional art career. At this period of time, I was started to get more into the classic rock of the 1960s and 1970s, and was influenced by the artwork of that era. My previous artwork consisted of mostly semi-realistic animal portraits and fantasy drawings.  I liked to draw, but was struggling with trying to find my own style.  I’d like to think I found it now!

The funny thing about this drawing was that my original plan for it was nothing like how it eventually turned out.  It was just going to be another wolf portrait, but my original idea was to make it just a bit more colorful.  As I was starting to draw it, however, it seemed like the drawing had a mind of its own, and I just started laying down streaks of colors.  I used complementary colors next to each other for extreme contrast, and the lines themselves were gradient and dynamic, changing colors with each twist and turn.  The right edge of the wolf’s body seems to start to “melt” into the background.

The overall color tones used did mimic the markings of a grey wolf: darker colors used in darker areas, and lighter ones in lighter areas.  This becomes apparent when you look at a greyscale version of the drawing, which you can see below. The dark areas are the inside of the ears, the middle of the forehead, around the eyes, the nose and mouth, and the markings just around the top and sides of the eyes.

This was one of the first drawings that I uploaded to my newly opened online store, then on CafePress. I honestly had no idea that anyone would like this at all, but it quickly became one of my most popular artworks of all time.  Even 12 years later, this still remains what I consider my flagship piece.  I still have the original drawing in my art portfolio.

This artwork is available in all of my online stores for purchase as an art print and on merchandise. Please read below to know what is available in each store.

My FineArtAmerica (also known as Pixels.com) store is the all around best place to go for art prints and home decor items. They have the most sizes available of any print store online, and the most variety of choices of paper types, mat colors and frames. Click the link or the picture to visit the store.  For art prints and wall art, choose from giclee paper prints, framed prints, stretched canvas, and prints on metal, acrylic and wood, as well as wall tapestries.  Home decor items include fleece blankets, coffee mugs, throw pillows, duvet covers, shower curtains, bath towels, beach towels, zipper pouches, and tote bags.  They also have some cell phone cases, t-shirts, greeting cards, spiral notebooks, yoga mats, and face masks.  They are the best of my stores to go for these items.

RedBubble Store – Home Decor and Apparel

Psychedelic wolf Redbubble Store

I have had my RedBubble store since 2008 and this was the very first design I uploaded there. They are a fantastic place to go for all kinds of gifts and decor. They have many of the same products as my FineArtAmerica store, but also have several unique products. Although they do have art prints and canvas prints, the sizes offered are more limited, with usually only 3-4 size choices for each print type. The one print they do have that is unique to RedBubble is the Gallery Art Board.

They have the most apparel options of any of my online stores. You can choose from so many different styles and colors of shirt, and even dresses and skirts!  They also have really awesome die-cut vinyl stickers, which come in four sizes, and your choice of transparent, glossy white, or matte white. They have many great electronics cases, including laptop skins and sleeves, iPad skins and cases, iPhone skins and cases, and Samsung Galaxy skins and cases.  They have three types of cell phone cases: soft, tough, and snap.

RedBubble has several products not found in FineArtAmerica, including acrylic blocks, bath mats, clocks, coasters, comforters, floor pillows, drawstring bags, cotton tote bags, travel mugs, and aprons. They also have other products such as pin back buttons, scarves, socks, hardcover journals, and water bottles.  They recently added jigsaw puzzles.
