Isopod – Armadillidium vulgare

Now for something totally different. This is a painting of a common pill bug (Armadillidium vulgare), also known as an isopod, woodlouse, potato bug, roly poly, or slater. It was painted with acrylics on an 11″ x 14″ wood panel, and completed in November 2023. I chose this animal because they are very underrepresented in art, yet are beloved among many who keep them as pets. I chose this species of woodlouse because they are worldwide and the most well known of all the isopod species. I chose my rainbow confetti background to make it interesting, since they live in debris and dirt. And the colors on the isopod have an almost metallic appearance, which was not planned but I like how it turned out.

These ubiquitous little arthropods are peaceful and underappreciated little creatures. As detritivores (eating decomposing plant matter), they are an essential part of the ecosystem. They make excellent pets and are easy to care for in captivity, provided their needs are met. They are highly gregarious and social, and the females have a strong maternal instinct and will actively protect their young. Their common name “pill-bug” refers to the fact that they can curl themselves up into a tight ball when threatened. Not all isopods have this ability.

More information about these unique animals can be found on the Wikipedia page and on the Animal Diversity Web.
