The latest painting in my vibrant psychedelic animal series is this male eastern box turtle! This colorful painting features a cute eastern box turtle in trippy rainbow colors with a psychedelic multicolored background. It was painted on a 11″ x 14″ wood panel and finished on August 12, 2022. A full size version of this artwork can be seen in my portfolio here. Eastern box turtles are a fairly vibrant species of turtle already, and I turned it up to 11. They typically have yellow and/or orange markings on a dark brown or black background, with the males usually being more colorful than females. Males also typically have bright red eyes. I took the yellowish orange markings of this turtle and painted them with fluorescent yellow, orange, pink and red tones. The real painting is way more intense than can be displayed on the screen. The orange areas actually seem to glow! The “black” areas of this turtle are created with teal, blue, violet, and purple, with some hot pink and green accents. The highlights on the shell were done with pale yellow. I enhanced the natural contrast in the shell and body of the turtle by adding intense highlights and shadows.
Even though box turtles appear to be a tortoise, they are actually closely related to water turtles, such as the red eared slider and panted turtle, in the family Emydidae. The eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a subspecies of the common box turtle (Terrapene carolina). There are seven species of box turtles, all of which are found in North America. Box turtles range throughout the United States and Mexico.
