This unique colorful pet portrait features an adorable Pomeranian dog named Theo. He is wearing a cute striped bow tie and laying on a teal blanket.  This portrait was painted with acrylic paints on a 16″ x 20″ stretched canvas, and was completed on March 3, 2022. It was a great pleasure to paint this portrait. I love large format paintings. I was able to get in a lot of detail that is difficult on a smaller painting! Theo has a lot of great textures in his fur, such as the fluffy fur on his head, and the fuzzy shorter fur on his body. The oranges and yellows in his fur contrast nicely to the blues, teals, and greens in the background. He looks just like a giant adorable teddy bear, and fills up the canvas in this larger than life painting.

Theo painting progress

I loved being able to use my large brushes to create the fur details for this cute Pomeranian dog portrait. I started off with and under-painting of orange, and added many layers of other colors. You can see some of the progress shots in the image above. I start out by painting the background. Then I work on the facial features: eyes, nose and mouth. Once those are right, I do a underpainting to establish general colors and values. I did not take a progress picture of the underpainting of the face, but it was very similar to the body in the third picture – just a lot of orange. I then go over with many layers and add fur details, highlights and shadows, and a few tones to balance the color. I always start with the face and head and do the body last.
