My first original psychedelic animal painting for 2022 is the Giant Panda! This painting was completed on February 9, 2022, and was created with acrylic paints on a 12″ x 16″ wood panel. The painting can be seen in my psychedelic portfolio. It features a giant panda bear sitting in a bamboo forest, eating a bamboo shoot. The colors are full-spectrum rainbow in a trippy style. I used almost every single tube of color for this painting. I also used a lot of fluorescent paints, which does not show up well on the scan. It does fluoresce under a blacklight though!

The background of the painting is a new style that I just came up with for this painting. It is a rainbow gradient going diagonally across the painting, with the colors repeating a few times. Going in the opposite direction as the colors are multicolored streaks of paint in various colors, mostly blue, yellow, and hot pink. This gives the painting a kind of tie dye feel. I really like how the background turned out, and am excited to use this new style in future paintings.

Progress of the Panda Painting

The bamboo tree trunks are also a rainbow gradient, with complementary colors to the background it touches. This allows me to use the same rainbow colors, but also makes the bamboo pop out from the background. The bamboo leaves were painted with a base of hot pink, with light yellow and blue on top. I used all three colors, that way no matter what was in the background, the leaves will stand out. In the photos above, you can see the progress of painting the background.

The panda bear has different techniques each for the “white” and “black” areas of the bear. For the “black” areas, I started with a base layer of medium blue, and layered on hot pink, fluorescent green, and dark purple. For the “white” areas of the panda, I started out with a rainbow gradient (hot pink, fluorescent orange, fluorescent yellow, fluorescent green, light blue, light purple). Then I used a wash of titanium white to lighten the colors to a more pastel quality. This way I get the vibrancy I needed while still having the colors be light.

This painting was a lot of fun to paint! While the original is not for sale, I do offer prints and other merch of this artwork. Please visit the links below to see all the products I offer with this artwork on it.
