This beautiful painting features a colorful portrait of a red and white border collie dog named Starbuck. The portrait was painted with acrylics on an 18″ x 24″ stretched canvas, in late November 2021. Her portrait features a lot of cool colors, like blue, green and purple. The background is what I call monochrome confetti, and is a base layer of medium blue, with several layers of teal, green, darker blue, and purple in broad square shaped brush strokes. The dark blue background contrasts nicely with the very light and white colors of her fur, and is somewhat busy but not too distracting.

She is a bicolor border collie in an uncommon color, known as red, brown, or chocolate, depending on the definition. She is a dark brown and white color. Creating “brown” in a colorful style means lots of purple and magenta. The shadows in the white areas of her fur were created with various shades of blue, violet, and magenta, with some very light yellow to add warm tones. Her eyes were left their natural color. The portrait was created primarily from one photo in this pose, with a few other photos used as secondary references for color and fur texture. I really enjoyed painting her portrait. I especially enjoyed painting all of her long flowing fur, and being able to do so in such a large format is wonderful.

The border collie is a herding breed from Scotland. They are a very intelligent and athletic dog breed, and are primarily used as a sheepdog. They are called border collies because they were first developed along the border between Scotland and England.
