This colorful pet portrait is of a cute blue merle Australian shepherd puppy named Lexi. Her portrait was created with acrylic paints on a 16″ x 20″ stretched canvas. It was finished in late October 2021. If you have followed my art for a while you may recognize the name Lexi from a previous painting I did last year. This is the same dog from the five dog portrait that I did in February of 2020. She is the blue merle Aussie one on the far right in that painting. This is her as a young  puppy! The portrait was created from one photo of her sitting in the grass with her head tilted to the side. The painting is pretty much the same as the photo, with the exception of the sunset colors for the background.

This painting pretty much uses every color of paint that I have. The background is a smooth gradient of purple, hot pink, red, orange and yellow. The grass is various shades of green with some brown and purple for shadows. Since Lexi is mostly white, she really pops from the background. The blue merle areas contrast nicely with the vibrant pink, red and orange of the background. Her ice blue eyes are a stark contrast to the bright orange of her face. Overall I am very pleased with how this turned out, and I loved creating another painting for this wonderful family.

Being an Aussie, she has lovely long flowing fur. I really love painting portraits of long haired dogs. I didn’t think I would, but as I paint more and more, I really love the flowing shapes that I can create with a large tapered paintbrush. If you have an Aussie, or another long coated breed of dog that you would like memorialized in my colorful style, please visit my Pet Portraits page for more information and contact form. I can create a portrait in any size and either in square or rectangle shapes. I will paint any animal species, and have a large portfolio of portraits you can peruse to get inspiration for your own portrait.
