These two colorful pet portraits were finished in early October 2021. They were painted for the same person, which is why I have them together in the same blog article!  On the left is Cheezie, a long haired buff orange tabby cat. On the right is Scrappy, who is a beagle and possibly Jack Russell terrier mixed breed dog. They were both painted individually on a 12″ x 16″ canvas each with acrylic paints.

Cheezie’s portrait features a bright orange cat on a blue abstract background. I chose blue as the background color since it would contrast nicely with the vibrant orange colors of the cat, since blue and orange are complementary colors. There are some pops of green, teal, and hot pink as well. His portrait was created mostly from one photograph, with some other secondary references used to make sure his colors and markings are accurate.  He is mostly a buff orange color with white on his chest and neck. I used fluorescent colors, which end up scanning far darker than they appear in the real life painting.

Scrappy’s portrait features a vibrant sunset colored background, with a gradient of purple, hot pink, red, orange and yellow. He is laying on a teal colored blanket, which was actually gray in the photo. He looks like a Jack Russell but with beagle markings. This is the first beagle type dog I have painted. I love the contrast of the blue and orange. Just like with Cheezie’s portrait, the orange areas of Scrappy are not as dark in the real painting.
