This unique pet portrait features a vibrant painting of an Aussiedoodle (Australian shepherd and poodle mixed breed) named Dipsea in bright rainbow colors. It was painted on a 10″ x 10″ stretched canvas, and was completed on June 30, 2021. This was a fun one to paint! I loved painting all the fur details of the long hair. Dipsea’s fur is a blue tick or blue merle, so not entirely solid black or gray, but with lighter hairs interspersed throughout. That is the Aussie part of the Aussiedoodle showing through! So, I was able to use lighter and brighter colors to represent this unique haircoat color.
Above is the comparison of the reference photo and the painting. I used the entire rainbow spectrum of colors in the fur. I started with a base of medium blue, with dark purple in the shadowed areas, and layered on multiple layers of teal, green, hot pink, magenta, light blue, and yellow. The background is a simple gradient of red, yellow, and blue, with the majority of the canvas being yellow. The owners like yellow so I was sure to incorporate it into the background. The light in this photo is very bright, and washed out some of the dog’s natural markings. In other photos, the areas around the eyes were much darker, so I used those photos as the reference for the facial markings to make sure they were accurate. The colors of the real life painting are much brighter than this digital scan, believe it or not!
Above are closeup views of the aussiedoodle portrait! Here you can see the brush strokes, colors, and fur details in the painting. Clicking on an image will show you a larger view of each picture. The eyes were left the natural color of dark brown, but the rest of the fur is vibrant and psychedelic.
