My first ever chicken painting! This is a portrait of Rosie, a Rhode Island Red chicken hen, who was a very special friend for her owner. Her portrait was painted with acrylics on a 5″ x 7″ stretched canvas. It was completed on June 22, 2021. The painting features vibrant colors, especially lots of red, orange, and purple, on an abstract background of orange, yellow, and light blue. There are some subtle blue highlights which make the subject pop and adds depth as well as complements the warm colors. A bigger view of the painting can be seen in my Pet Portraits portfolio gallery.
In the image above is the comparison of the photo reference and the finished painting. The photograph was great and used as-is. I decided to zoom in to just the head and upper body since the canvas size was small, so I could capture details and the expression well. Rosie has lots of gorgeous mahogany red colors, with bright orange eyes and vibrant pink-red colors in her comb and wattle, so she is already a pretty colorful bird. I took what was already there and amplified it, adding rich purples and blues to the darker areas to make them pop. A very subtle blue outline was added around her profile to separate her from the orange colors of the background and make her stand out more.
This is my very first chicken portrait, and I really hope to do more in the future! I would love to paint more farm animals, livestock, and especially domestic fowl like chickens, roosters, ducks, and turkeys!
