This unique and vibrant pet portrait features a colorful painting of a chocolate Labrador Retriever dog named Cocoa. She is painted with acrylic paints on an 18″ x 24″ stretched canvas, and was completed on May 13, 2021. Her portrait was created with bright vibrant rainbow colors, especially a lot of purple, blue, magenta, and hot pink. The background is a gradient of purple, blue, green, and yellow. The painting was done with many layers of paint to create depth.
I extended the painting down a bit more than the photo, and used other photos to fill in details. The photo was perfect in displaying her sweet yet curious expression. The eyes were left their natural color, which is a brownish amber. Even though this dog is actually brown (chocolate) in color, the owner preferred it to be created in a vibrant rainbow of colors, focusing on blue and purple especially. I added magenta, and hot pink to bring warmth to the coat color, and give the impression of brown fur even though no brown was used. I also added bits of yellow and green to add interest and make the painting more dynamic.
