My newest painting, Peaceful Winter Arctic Fox, is available online for purchase as a fine art print, canvas print, tote bag, home decor, cell phone case, and much more in my online stores. This painting was created with acrylic paints on board, and measures 11″ wide by 14″ tall. It was completed on March 28, 2019. The original painting is for sale, if you are interested please Contact Me.
Here you can see a closeup of the painting. This painting is a departure from my typical rainbow style. For this, I limited the palette to various shades of blue and blue-purple, with some pale yellow for warmth. The eyes are the natural orange-brown color. I started this painting by adding a layer of light blue, and going over it with many successively darker layers until the desired result was reached. Some orange was added to the shadows to warm them up and provide some contrast to the blue. The subject still appears “white” even though very little pure white was used. The fox is light from the side, creating a dramatic effect. The Arctic fox is not a very common subject of paintings for some reason. The reference photo I used to create this painting was taken by Jonatan Pie on Unsplash. It is a public domain photograph. I modified the colors and the lighting from the photograph.
About the Arctic Fox
The Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus) is also known as the polar fox, white fox, and snow fox. They are a small species of fox that are native to the Arctic regions of North America, Iceland, Greenland, Europe and Asia. They are a member of the vulpine group of foxes, which is also known as the “true” foxes, which consists of 12 species and includes the red fox, kit fox, and fennec fox. There are five subspecies of Arctic fox, with four distinct subspecies living on islands.
Their thick fur keeps them warm and camouflaged in their cold home environment. The bottoms of their foot pads are completely covered in fur to insulate them from the cold. They have other adaptations to the cold, such as their short round ears, short legs, short muzzle, and compact body. There are two color morphs of the Arctic fox: the white phase and the blue phase. The more common white phase changes color with the seasons. They are solid white with longer fur in the winter, and have shorter gray fur in the summer. The rare blue phase is a longer solid gray in the winter and shorter darker gray in the summer. The white phase is usually found inland while the blue phase tends to live along the coastal regions.
The arctic fox feeds mostly on small mammals, such as lemmings, arctic hares, voles, and seal pups. They are opportunistic feeders, and will also eat sea birds, fish, carrion, berries, seaweed, and insects. They fall prey to polar bears, wolves, red foxes, golden eagles, wolverines, and grizzly bears.
