Pet Portrait of a Maine Coon cat named Achilles. Painted with acrylic paints on 8″ x 10″ stretched canvas, July 2018. For this portrait, the owner wanted realistic colors. For the brown areas, I actually used very little out-of-the-tube brown. Instead, I blended my own browns using complementary colors (red-green, orange-blue, yellow-purple) mixed with black to darken or white to lighten. The black areas were a mixture of crimson red and ultramarine blue, which creates a very deep purple. When layered over the brown areas it creates black. For the background, I chose a mixture of yellows, whites, blues, and browns, which created this lovely creamy yellow background. I feel like this really brings out the yellows in his eyes, and draws attention to that area.
