Drawing of a BMW 2011 135i in Blue Water Metallic color. Drawn with Prismacolor colored pencils on Strathmore 400 Series drawing paper, 11″ x 14″. Private Commission. Photo reference provided by commissioner.
This is very much outside of my normal fare, both in terms of style and subject matter! This is the very first time, ever, that I have drawn a car. This was a challenge for me on many levels. First was getting the proportions and structure of the car correct. That was a challenge for me, since I normally draw animals! Mostly it is correct, although there are a few minor flaws. This is drawn completely freehand without the use of a grid or tracing (I never use a grid or tracing in any of my drawings anyway). Second was choosing the color; again a challenge because I like to work in bold full spectrum colors. This car has a greyish-blue paint color that is very hard to replicate with colored pencils. Third is getting the details and inner structure right. I had the most difficult time with the wheels. Overall, I am very happy with the way this turned out. Especially with the little details like the reflections on the windows, the light shine on the headlights, and the details in the grill and rims.
Overall, it was very fun to draw, and I felt it really pushed my boundaries as an artist. It is nice to do something different every now and then.
